Women's Fertility and Choice

From ancient Egypt to the present day, women have always sought control over their own bodies — and the fight is far from over.

Join NOVA Blue Squad for an eye-opening lecture by Judy Waxman, Vice President of Health and Reproductive Rights at the National Women's Law Center, tracing the full history of women's fertility and reproductive rights. Starting in 3000 BCE, Judy will walk us through how women across centuries and cultures have tried to limit their fertility — the methods they used, the laws they faced, the acceptance (or condemnation) they encountered — and who, throughout history, stood with women and who did not. The lecture concludes with a candid look at where we stand in the U.S. today.

But this afternoon isn't just about learning — it's also about community. We'll have plenty of time to connect, catch up, and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun with our fellow NBS members. This is a potluck-style gathering, so if you'd like to bring a little something to share — a snack, an appetizer, a treat — we'd love it! Sign up to bring something after you RSVP.

Judy Waxman brings decades of expertise to this conversation, including her prior roles as Deputy Executive Director at Families USA, Managing Attorney at the National Health Law Program, adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, and attorney for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She holds a law degree from American University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami.
