The Rise of Autocracies and the Loss of Human Rights with Rev. Geoff Curtis

Geoff is a retired Episcopal Priest who spent over thirty years reinvigorating the Episcopal Church in Hoboken NJ. During that time he organized six faith communities to begin a shelter for the homeless which grew into a 24/7 full-service agency. He started an Episcopal Day School and was a founding member of the Interfaith Community Organization which won a $500 million dollar settlement with Honeywell to clean up contaminated land. Through his community organizing work the Jubilee Center, on the west side of town, was created to serve 100 children in public housing with after-school and summer camp programs. Foundational to his ministry was the training by the Industrial Areas Foundation in community organizing and the Urban Theology Unit in contextual theology and praxis.

In this adult education forum, Geoff will share the human rights work of Cristosal.
Cristosal is recognized as the leading organization working to protect human rights and change public policies to fight corruption and strengthen democracy in the region.  They promote justice and democratic societies in northern Central America through strategic human rights litigation, research, education, and victim protection. Today, Cristosal is at the center of every major policy debate regarding human rights in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The event is part of St. Peter's Episcopal Church's Adult Forum, but all are welcome to hear more about this important topic.  The session will be held in the Parish Hall, which is behind the church building and accessed by doors in the cloister (breezeway) between the church and the parish hall.  (You will see the graveyard on either side.  Parking on the street in Morristown is free on Sunday, but can be challenging, and there may be restrictions on side streets so allow time.)

This is Palm Sunday in this faith tradition.  The service (open to all) starts at 10:30 and should be done to allow for the forum to start at 11:45, but it may be a little later.
