Portage County Action Team: Power of Sheriffs

Advocates, Allies & Activists are honored to co-sponsor an event with the ACLU and other esteemed organizations in Portage County, OH. It is part of a civics education series, The Power Of. This session focuses on the role of sheriffs, a timely topic in light of recent allegations of voter intimidation against the current sheriff in the county. If you live in the area, we'd love for you to join us. Registration is required. A more detailed description of the meeting is listed below:

With broad jurisdiction and limited state oversight, sheriffs play an important role in policing, incarceration, and public safety. Join the Portage County Action Team and partners for a community discussion unpacking the power and scope of local sheriffs. What are the differences between sheriffs and police officers? Can sheriffs promote criminal legal system reform or support free and fair elections? Hear from community partners as we discuss ways to hold the sheriff accountable to all voters. Leave with important information about the sheriff's position and plug into voter protection opportunities locally and statewide. Light lunch will be made available.
