NBS Book Club

Do you want to read books that help you understand what is happening around us, politically and culturally; books that might help you find the best path to a positive outcome for yourself and your/our community? Then join the NOVA Blue Squad Book Club. Let’s explore, and better understand, this world we are living through together.

- Membership will meet in person, will be limited to 12 to facilitate discussion, and will be on a first come, first serve basis.
- The Book Club will meet Sunday afternoons, 2-4:00 p.m. in members’ homes, or a convenient library, or café, etc. Location will rotate. We will reserve 30 minutes for social time, either before, or after the book review and discussion.
- The Club will read 10 books a year reserving July for an in person organizing meeting to suggest and vote on the coming year’s list of books. We will not meet in August.
- Each member will take a turn as book reviewer, beginning with biographical information about the author and any particular information about the book itself and then lead a discussion.

To start:
- First meeting will be April 13th , 2-4:00 p.m. in South Arlington
- Plenty of street parking - please do not block any walkways
- Marcia will lead the review and discussion of, The Sum of Us by Heather McGee. If you
wish to join the club, please read this book before attending the meeting
- There are hard copies, ebook, and audiobook copies of the book in Arlington library
- It is also available on Kindle and costs $11.28 in paperback on Amazon

- Here is a partial summary of the book: “Heather McGhee’s specialty is the
American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American
public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing
public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and
policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color.
Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our
most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and
constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all. But how did this
happen? And is there a way out?”

Light refreshments will be offered. After the discussion, the group will pick books to read for the next several meetings, so please be ready with suggestions.
