MWMM social meet-up

Hi Mountain people
This Thursday is our every-other-Thursday social and venting meet-up.
A little homework for this week....
I have copied the text of an email from RedWine&Blues that I received today.
The Trump administration’s ICE agency has a scary new way for finding information – getting it from state-controlled databases at the Department of Motor Vehicles.1 That’s right – with a simple request, an ICE agent can access your photo, home address, height, hair color, and more. They can even combine that information with facial-recognition software and social media scraping to track protestors and immigrants (and anyone, really) right to their homes. “Scary” is actually an understatement. Using a network called Nlets, ICE has already conducted hundreds of thousands of searches for driver’s license information this year. This is a horrible invasion of privacy for everyone and our governor has the power to stop it. Write an emailor card to your representatives to say, don’t share DMV information with ICE!
Nlets is a nonprofit organization that allows law enforcement agencies to share information across state lines. It’s how a police officer can quickly look up a license for out-of-state drivers they pull over, and also how crimes can be solved more quickly than they used to be.2 It wasn’t meant to give Border Patrol and Homeland Security the ability to look up someone’s eye color, race, and home address. Many immigrants and citizens are already afraid of driving due to the risk of being violently arrested by ICE. People are afraid to go to work, access healthcare, and drive their kids to school. What is the actual benefit of all of this surveillance? Who is really benefiting from the data – our data – that is being collected and used? Only six states so far have blocked Nlets from sharing records with ICE: Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and Washington. But we can grow that number! Our governor has the power to control who can access DMV information in your state. If you live in any state other than the six listed above, we can help you contact your governor to demand that they stop sharing your information with ICE. Send Governor Polis a message – No DMV info for ICE! Thank you for standing up for our rights!Katie
