Medina County Budget Commission

We're reaching out to share a concerning development that could impact students and schools across Medina county.

In an unprecedented move, the Medina County Budget Commission is mandating that school districts give back locally approved levy funds, money that voters intentionally invested in supporting their schools and students. These dollars are not surplus; they are already committed to maintaining staff, sustaining student programs, and ensuring the daily operation of our schools. This action directly challenges the will of the community and creates uncertainty for students and educators alike.

This is not extra funding. It’s money schools are counting on.

What’s especially troubling is that this request is being made without a transparent process, or clear calculation. The explanation for these cuts from the County Budget Commission is to provide property tax relief.  This one time relief does not take into consideration that the schools provide a multi-year forecast of their finances and take into consideration the levy cycles in their budgeting process.

Public dollars, particularly those already approved by voters, deserve accountability and clarity.

We all know property taxes matter. But this is not the way to provide relief. Sudden, unclear changes like this create instability for schools and undermine trust in the system.

Our schools and communities deserve transparency, stability, and respect for voter decisions.
