Making Good Trouble Book Club

We are meeting at the Influence Cafe, (3324 Secor Rd., Suite 2&3, Toledo). Folks really enjoyed being at the Influence Cafe at the last meeting. There are some non-caffeine drinks available as well as pastries for those of us with a sweet tooth (Derek’s outing himself here). The June monthly read and topical discussion is the second half of The Education Wars: A Citizen’s Guide and Defense Manual by Jennifer Berkshire and Jack Schneider (ISBN: 9781620978542; 192 p.). We split this short book and are now reading the last four chapters (p.94-177) to read and discuss in the June book club meeting.
Here are the chapters to read:
Chapter 5: What’s Really Behind the Push for Parental Rights?
Chapter 6: What’s So Bad About Funding Students, not Systems?
Chapter 7: Democracy is Not a Spectator Sport.
Chapter 8: Reclaiming Education as a Public Good.
Bonus chapter: Conclusion
The book provides a concise and useful tool for those who want to defend our public education system against privatization and right-wing extremism. The book gives practical strategies for parents, teachers, and community members committed to protecting public education as a “public good.”
Join us even if you have not had time to read it. We hope to cover several topics raised throughout the book that are relevant to our current situation.
There are limited available copies at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library. Copies can be purchased online or through your local bookstore.
We hope to hear what you are reading, whether fiction or non-fictions. Come with some ideas for future books to read. We are trying to keep the books to a reasonable length, 250 pages or below. Books over 200 pages will be split up for more than one book club meeting.
If you like reading and discussing books that take a deep dive into our current political or social issues, whether fiction or non-fiction, then this book club is for you.
