About the Event:

"When discussing the history of Nazi Germany, it’s easy to focus a lot of attention on the Führer. Believing the myths invented about Adolf Hitler, we too often ascribe to him and his lieutenants the sole responsibility for the Nazi seizure of power. We also tend to blame Nazi leaders for the escalating violence of their policies – uniting an Aryan community behind the Führer (Volksgemeinschaft), fighting a global war for “living space” (Lebensraum), and realizing their vision of “a world without Jews” (antisemitism). In everyday life, however, fascism spread and worked in more insidious ways.

In this webinar, historian Drew Bergerson will explore the collapse of democracy into fascism from the perspective of ordinary Germans. While Nazi leaders seized power in the halls of government, ordinary Nazis solicited the aid of friends and neighbors in implementing a Volksgemeinschaft, Lebensraum, and antisemitism in their lifeworld. Based on years of research in the case-study town of Hildesheim, Bergerson will explore the ethical challenges facing ordinary Germans when challenged to conform by their Nazi neighbors and the un/intended outcomes of their actions.

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values."
