Climate Change: A fundamental challenge for the future of all who live in our world

Presented by Dr. Andy Jorgensen
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry
University of Toledo
Climate change is a very intense topic which finds its way into political, business and social conversations, often with vocal disagreement among participants. We now know that the situation has reached a critical state as 2024 had the warmest temperatures since we started measurements in 1850. We are past the time to question whether there is a problem and are at the point of needing to address the situation.
This presentation will give background information about the phenomenon and methods which have been used to characterize these changes, as well as summarize some consequences which have been experienced and what can be expected for the future. We will then consider solutions to the problem, such as renewable energy and nuclear energy.
Dr. Jorgensen spent a sabbatical leave as Senior Fellow at the National Council for Science and the Environment to develop resources to be used for climate change education. This project was supported by grants from NASA and NSF.
He earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Quincy University and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was selected as an American Chemical Society Fellow and he received an American Chemical Society-Committee on Environmental Improvement Award for Incorporating Sustainability into Chemistry Education. He was named a University of Toledo Outstanding Teacher and he was selected for an Edith Rathbun Outreach and Engagement Excellence Award from the University of Toledo.
