BANNED BOOKS PRESENTATION

You've probably heard the buzz about the book bans increasing in the U.S.   Is this really happening, and does it matter? The short answer: yes, and yes. The good news is, there is a lot we can do to fight back, and one of the most powerful tools is your holiday shopping list.  Join us for a presentation Saturday Nov 15th at 10:30 as we discuss book bans, why they happen, what they mean, and how we can stop them.

After the presentation we will be forming The People's Power Collective book club!  Together we will pick out what book we want to read first and decide how we want to proceed with the club.

The Trump administration has begun to purge Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in offices in five major U.S. cities and fill some of those top posts with senior Border Patrol agents, who will take over interior immigration enforcement in those regions, according to five sources familiar with the plans. Denver is one of those cities and ICE is about to go nuclear.

Our action item for the meeting will be to make whistle kits.

Across Chicago, communities have been using whistles to help keep each other safe. When ICE "agents" are spotted, the whistles ring out: three short chirps means ICE is nearby, or one long note if someone is being detained.

The sound brings neighbors out of their homes to witness and document. Allies gather. Reports are made to local immigrant rights groups. ICE kidnappings no longer happen quietly.

It’s working. Early warnings are creating time for at-risk neighbors to seek safety and for allies to come outside and document the scene and gather needed info to report to immigrant rights groups.

Chicago showed it works. We can too.
